The Presidency has described Peter Obi’s recent Channels TV interview as a “PR disaster,” saying the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate missed a chance to redeem himself on the 2023 election outcome.
In a statement posted on X on Monday, President Bola Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, criticised Obi’s handling of questions about his political journey and the 2023 presidential poll.
Onanuga said interviewer Seun Okinbaloye gave Obi a “golden opportunity” to move past the 2023 results, but Obi instead maintained he was rigged out. “You lost, Peter. You didn’t win that election. You came third,” Onanuga stated.
He argued that Obi’s performance relied heavily on ethnic bloc voting and social media support, rather than nationwide structures. Onanuga also accused Obi of being a “political nomad” who abandons parties when they no longer serve his ambitions instead of building them.
“If the NDC fails to deliver what you want, you are not far away from the exit door. You would shamelessly migrate to yet another party. You do not build; you always want to reap where you did not sow,” the presidential spokesman added.
Onanuga said he tuned off the interview after about 30 minutes, concluding it failed to boost Obi’s prospects ahead of 2027.
The remarks form part of ongoing exchanges between the Presidency and the opposition figure following the Sunday interview.
