In a successful security operation, about 22 individuals from Kwara South Senatorial District have been freed from armed bandits' captivity.
The victims were rescued during a fierce and coordinated effort by Kogi State Joint Security Forces, which included personnel from the military, police, hunters, and vigilante groups. The operation targeted forests along the Kwara-Kogi border, according to a statement from the Kwara South Joint Security Watch released on Sunday.
All freed victims have been reunited with their families. Among those rescued were:Four people from Idofin-Igbana, who had been kidnapped about three months earlier.
15 Ikerin Church worshippers from Eda Oniyo, abducted on April 28, 2026, during a vigil.
Three of the remaining victims from the ECWA Church in Omugo, kidnapped in early April 2026 while worshipping.
According to reports, five of the Omugo ECWA Church victims were earlier reported to have died in captivity under circumstances that are yet to be fully ascertained. The security outfit also mentioned that other unidentified individuals regained their freedom through the same proactive operations in Kogi State. “We give glory to God for answered prayers. We commend the bravery and sacrifice of the Kogi State Joint Security Operatives,” the statement added.
This rescue highlights ongoing collaborative efforts by security agencies to combat banditry in the region.
