Police Arrest Four Officers for Extorting ICPC Chairman in Abuja

The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has detained four officers accused of extorting N53,000 from the Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Dr. Musa Aliyu (SAN), during an illegal stop-and-search operation in Abuja.

FCT Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Sanusi, disclosed the arrests on Monday, describing the officers as “thieves” who had no business wearing the police uniform.

According to Sanusi, the policemen abandoned their duty posts and mounted an unauthorised checkpoint around the Banex area of Wuse, where they compelled the ICPC boss to withdraw cash via a Point of Sale operator, including transaction charges, before sharing the money among themselves.

“They extorted him of N53,000. They took him to a POS, he withdrew the money, paid the charges, and they shared it among themselves,” Sanusi said.

Investigations revealed the officers had formed a rogue gang to extort motorists. The command declared them wanted before arresting their leader, whose confession led to the capture of the others.

Sanusi assured that the culprits would face severe disciplinary measures, including dismissal, and reiterated the Inspector-General of Police’s ban on indiscriminate phone searches by patrol officers.

He urged residents to resist unlawful demands and report misconduct through police emergency lines.“We will enforce the IG’s directive. If we get them, they will face disciplinary actions and the consequences of their crimes,” he added.
