Oyo, Borno Abductions: Tinubu Showing Incapacity, Lack of Compassion- Peter Obi

Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has criticized President Bola Tinubu for what he described as “incapacity and lack of compassion” in handling the prolonged abduction of schoolchildren in Oyo and Borno states.

In a post on his verified X handle, Obi expressed deep concern that more than 50 days after the Oyo abductions, no tangible rescue effort has been made.

He said the situation reflects Nigeria’s worsening leadership crisis, warning that uncompassionate governance risks turning citizens’ frustration into volatile resentment.

“It is even more traumatising when the leader presiding over that collapse demonstrates clear incapacity and a lack of compassion,” Obi wrote.

Obi revealed that he had twice appealed publicly to the kidnappers for the children’s release and personally called Governor Seyi Makinde to express solidarity.

On July 3, he visited Ibadan with Prof. Pat Utomi to meet the governor, sharing his own experiences tackling insecurity as former Anambra State governor.

He noted with shock that Makinde had not received a single call from President Tinubu regarding the crisis, contrasting this with past presidents who personally engaged state leaders during major security challenges.

Obi recalled the 2014 Chibok girls abduction under President Goodluck Jonathan, which drew global outrage.

Despite criticism that Jonathan delayed in contacting state officials, Obi emphasized that security agencies at the time provided regular updates, unlike the silence surrounding the current Oyo and Borno incidents.
