NYSC Reforms: Adire Fabric to Replace Khaki as Uniform

The Federal Government has announced a major change for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme: the traditional khaki uniform will be replaced with Adire fabric as part of broader reforms aimed at boosting local industries.

Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, made the disclosure on Thursday during an appearance on Channels Television’s ‘The Morning Brief’.Olawande explained that the shift to Adire aligns with the government’s commitment to strengthening local production and ensuring that public spending circulates within Nigeria’s economy.“It’s Adire. So, Adire is being produced in Nigeria. We have them in Ogun, we have them in Kwara, we have textile industry. Let’s put our money back into the country,” the minister said.

He added that the new uniform will be produced locally, leveraging existing manufacturing hubs for Adire across the country. The initiative is expected to stimulate Nigeria’s textile sector, create demand for indigenous craftsmanship, and support local artisans through government procurement.

In addition to the uniform change, the minister revealed that the government is restructuring the NYSC posting system. Corps members will now be deployed based on their professional qualifications and fields of study to maximise the impact of their service year.

The move has been welcomed by many as a step towards promoting cultural heritage and economic self-reliance, with Adire, a traditional tie-dye fabric with deep roots in Nigerian craftsmanship — set to become the new face of the NYSC.
