Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and candidate in the 2026 Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) presidential election, Lateef Omoyemi Akangbe, has formally challenged the outcome of the poll, urging the NBA National Officers Election Appeal Committee to nullify the results and order a fresh election.
In a petition dated July 27, 2026, Akangbe alleged that the July 18 election was marred by widespread irregularities, including the malfunction of the electronic voting platform, failure of eligible voters to receive One-Time Passwords (OTPs), deployment of multiple voting websites, and extension of the voting period beyond the advertised deadline.
The Electoral Committee of the NBA (ECNBA) had declared Mrs. Oyinkansola Badejo-Okunsanya, SAN, winner of the election with 12,317 votes (47.18%). Akangbe polled 7,934 votes (30.39%), while Aare Olumuyiwa Akinboro secured 5,855 votes (22.43%).
Akangbe argued that the election violated the NBA Constitution 2015 (as amended) and ECNBA’s revised guidelines. He claimed the voting platform crashed minutes after commencement and remained inaccessible for over seven hours, with the ECNBA later attributing the disruption to a cyberattack. He further alleged that the process was migrated to an unapproved website, creating confusion among voters.
The petitioner also raised concerns about suspicious voting patterns, alleged pre-programming of results, and disenfranchisement of over 56,000 eligible voters, including himself. He contended that the extension of voting into July 19 without proper notice undermined transparency.
Akangbe is seeking access to extensive electronic record including server logs, voter authentication data, and OTP delivery records to enable an independent audit. He maintained that the irregularities were substantial enough to render the declared result invalid.
Among the reliefs sought, Akangbe asked the Appeal Committee to nullify the election, cancel Badejo-Okunsanya’s declaration as winner, and direct the NBA to conduct a fresh presidential poll.
The petition, naming the Incorporated Trustees of the NBA, the ECNBA, and Badejo-Okunsanya as respondents, is now before the NBA National Officers Election Appeal Committee for determination.
