The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has announced the release of James Adio, the immediate past Students’ Union Government President of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), days after he was remanded by a Magistrate Court in Ekiti State.
NANS President, Akinteye Babatunde, disclosed the development in a post on his X handle on Friday, describing Adio’s freedom as “a victory for justice.”
“I am pleased to announce that Comrade Adio, the immediate past FUOYE SUG President, who was remanded in prison, has regained his freedom. I just spoke with him personally, and I am delighted to confirm that he is in high spirits,” Akinteye wrote.
He commended the Chairman of the NANS Joint Campus Committee in Ekiti State for his leadership during Adio’s detention, and also praised the association’s National Head of Administration for his proactive role in securing the release.
NANS had earlier directed its members in Ekiti to mobilise for peaceful protests, describing Adio’s remand as a miscarriage of justice. The student body alleged that Adio, who was the complainant in the case, had no criminal charges against him but was unjustly imprisoned.
While the exact circumstances surrounding his release have not yet been disclosed by the court or the Ekiti State Ministry of Justice, NANS said the development underscores the power of solidarity.
“This victory is a reminder that when we stand together in solidarity, justice can prevail,” Akinteye added.
