The Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs (LASODA), in
partnership with Lagos State Motor Vehicle Administration Agency (MVAA), has
concluded plans to introduce special number plates for persons with
disabilities (PWDs).
The proposal was the focus of a courtesy visit by the
management of LASODA to the MVAA, where both agencies discussed modalities for
developing and implementing a disability-friendly vehicle identification system
in the state.
The initiative is aimed at increasing recognition and
improving accessibility and mobility for PWDs across the state.
Speaking during the meeting, Abdulrasheed Muri-Okunola,
permanent secretary of MVAA, described the proposal as a landmark initiative
that aligns with Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s vision of building “a greater Lagos that
leaves no one behind.”
Muri-Okunola said the specialised number plates would
enhance visibility and accessibility for PWDs, while promoting a more inclusive
transport system in the state.
“This is indeed a laudable initiative that aligns perfectly
with the principles of inclusive governance,” he said.
“We are committed to supporting this process and are
confident that the collaboration between our agencies will yield positive
results,” he said.
The permanent secretary said discussions had already started
with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) on the proposed number plates.
He added that the agency would begin the necessary
administrative procedures and continue partnering with LASODA to ensure that
the successful implementation of the initiative.
Adenike Oyetunde-Lawal, general manager of LASODA, said the
visit was aimed at initiating strategic discussions on the initiative to meet
the needs of PWDs in the state.
She said the initiative would cover all categories of PWDs,
as well as parents and caregivers of children with disabilities.
According to her, the system would significantly improve
identification, accessibility and support for members of the disability
community in the state.
She emphasised that the state government’s policies and
programmes should prioritise disability inclusion, adding that the proposed
initiative is another practical step towards creating a more accessible and
equitable society.
She urged stakeholders to see themselves as partners in
advancing inclusion, noting that building a society where PWDs are recognised,
respected and fully included is a shared responsibility.
