The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has dismissed reports circulating on social media claiming it had revised the campaign timetable for the 2027 general elections.
A graphic that went viral online suggested changes to the official timetable, claiming that campaigns for the presidential and National Assembly elections would end on January 15, 2027 (instead of January 14), while governorship and state House of Assembly campaigns would end on February 5, 2027 (instead of February 4).
The election dates remained unchanged at January 16, 2027, for presidential and National Assembly polls, and February 6, 2027, for governorship and state assembly elections.
Reacting to the development, the Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, Adedayo Oketola, described the graphic as fake and clarified that it did not originate from the commission.
“This graphic did not emanate from INEC. The commission does not issue campaign timetables separately,” Oketola stated. He emphasized that all official campaign timelines are already contained in the revised timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 general elections released on February 26, 2026.
According to the official timetable, campaigns for the presidential and National Assembly elections are scheduled to commence on August 19, 2026, and end on January 14, 2027. Governorship and state assembly campaigns will begin on September 9, 2026, and close on February 4, 2027, exactly 24 hours before the respective polls. The notice of election is set for February 13, 2026.
Oketola urged the media and the public to always verify electoral information through the commission’s official communication channels, especially as the country enters the election season. He called for vigilance against the spread of misinformation and disinformation.
