Lagos State Govt to Sue X User Over Misleading Flood Video

The Lagos State Government has announced plans to pursue legal action against a social media user who shared a false video purporting to show flooding in Lagos.

Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, made the disclosure on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday, July 14, 2026.

He emphasized that simply deleting the post after it was debunked would not exempt the user from responsibility.

“The flood video you shared and attributed to Lagos State is actually from Bangladesh,” Wahab stated.

“We kindly encourage you to verify the authenticity and origin of such content before sharing it, as the dissemination of inaccurate information can mislead the public and undermine genuine discussions about issues affecting Lagos.”

The commissioner identified the user as “Enugu Loudspeaker (#Jamessucre2).” He stressed that while the government respects freedom of expression, this right comes with responsibilities and legal limits.

“Taking down the post after misleading the public does not absolve you of the responsibility.

Appropriate legal action will still be pursued, and this matter will be taken to its logical conclusion in accordance with the law,” Wahab wrote.

He added that deliberately spreading false information undermines government efforts and reduces the credibility of genuine complaints from residents.

Following the government's clarification, the X user admitted the video originated outside Nigeria and deleted the post, stating: “It’s been confirmed to have happened outside the country. The post has been taken down.”

Despite the retraction, the Lagos State Government confirmed it would proceed with legal action over the dissemination of the misleading content.
