Kano Empowers 1,900 Butchers with Working Tools, Stresses Hygiene Standards

The Kano State Government on Thursday distributed working tools to 1,900 butchers drawn from across the state’s 44 local government areas as part of its ongoing empowerment programme.

Governor Abba Yusuf, who presided over the distribution event at the Government House, described the initiative as a key component of his administration’s efforts to strengthen small businesses, reduce poverty, improve food safety, and promote sustainable economic growth.

“The initiative is part of our administration’s broader agenda to strengthen small businesses, reduce poverty, improve food safety and drive sustainable economic growth across Kano State,” the governor said.

Yusuf emphasised the critical role of butchers in the food supply chain and warned that poor sanitary practices could expose consumers to food-borne diseases.

He stressed that strict hygiene standards in abattoirs and meat processing must remain non-negotiable.

The governor urged the beneficiaries to utilise the tools to expand their businesses, boost productivity, create employment opportunities, and improve their livelihoods.

He reaffirmed that empowering artisans and trade associations remains a central pillar of his people-focused economic development strategy, adding that the government will continue to roll out programmes that promote self-reliance and entrepreneurship.

The Chairman of the Kano State Butchers Association, Alhaji Nasiru Isyaku, commended the governor for the unprecedented support, describing it as a major boost to the welfare of butchers and the professionalism of the industry.

He pledged that association members would uphold high hygienic and professional standards in their operations.
