ISWAP Propaganda Chief, Media Team Eliminated in Borno Clash – Army

Troops of Operation Hadin Kai have confirmed the killing of Abu Salim al-Barnawi, a senior Boko Haram/ISWAP commander who later became the group’s chief photographer and propaganda strategist, during a failed terrorist attack in Cross Kauwa, Borno State.

According to Acting Military Information Officer, Captain Mohammed Goni, Abu Salim was neutralized alongside two members of ISWAP’s mobile media unit, Abu Umar Khattab and Abu Khalid Usman during the July 12 infiltration attempt.

Troops recovered a video camera and other propaganda tools from the scene.Military intelligence revealed that Abu Salim previously coordinated cross-border raids into Cameroon before being reassigned to ISWAP’s media wing, where he documented attacks, produced extremist propaganda, and aided recruitment.

The insurgent group has since acknowledged his death by publishing an obituary, a move the army described as evidence of ISWAP’s mounting losses.

The operation also reportedly claimed the lives of a Syrian fighter and ISWAP commander Aliyu Zabarmari, while another foreign fighter remains unaccounted for.

Captain Goni emphasized that the elimination of such seasoned operatives weakens ISWAP’s propaganda machinery, erodes its command structure, and diminishes its ability to project strength.

He reaffirmed the military’s commitment to intelligence-led offensives aimed at dismantling Boko Haram and ISWAP networks, stressing that sustained pressure is making it increasingly difficult for the insurgents to replace experienced operatives.
