Women of Uzoagba Ancient Kingdom in Ikeduru LGA, Imo State, staged a peaceful protest on Friday against the council chairman, Justice Nze, accusing him of imposing a traditional ruler and President General (PG) on the community without due process.
The protesters, who marched to the council headquarters in Iho, carried placards with inscriptions such as “Respect Our Tradition”, “Uzoagba Ezeship Stool Is Not Hereditary”, and “We Say No to the Imposition of an Eze in Uzoagba”.
Speaking to journalists, Mrs. Maria Emetumba, President General of the Women Wing of Uzoagba Development Union (UDU), said the demonstration was to prevent bloodshed and crisis.
She stressed that since the matter is before a competent court, the chairman should allow the judiciary to decide before conducting any election.
A communique signed by the wing’s leadership, including Secretary-General Ezinne Patricia Ndukwu, warned that imposing electoral committee members for the UDU and Ezeship elections could spark unrest.
“The position of Uzoagba President General is currently the subject of litigation before a court of competent jurisdiction and should not be interfered with,” the statement read.
Community youth leader Michael Chibuike Okpara echoed the call for restraint, urging the chairman to avoid actions that could disrupt Uzoagba’s long-standing unity.
Similarly, matron Bernadette Obiyor emphasized respect for judicial processes, noting that the case is scheduled for hearing on August 14, 2026.
In response, Justice Nze expressed displeasure over the protest, claiming he was not notified beforehand.
He insisted his actions were lawful and aimed at maintaining peace, adding that he believed the court case had already been resolved.
