The Imole Campaign Council, the political mobilisation team of Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, has petitioned the British High Commission and written to the Inspector-General of Police, calling for a free, fair, and credible governorship election in the state scheduled for August 15, 2026.
Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja, the council’s spokesperson, Pelumi Olajengbesi, stressed that the credibility of the Osun poll would serve as a litmus test for Nigeria’s democratic institutions ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Olajengbesi said, “This election is a major test of the integrity of INEC, the Inspector General of Police, and our institutions to know if we are prepared enough to conduct a free, fair, and credible election in 2027.”
He added that the campaign council had also engaged the Coalition of Public Interest Lawyers to promote transparency and accountability during the process.
The council raised concerns over alleged security lapses in the state, accusing the police of failing to act on reports of violence.
It urged international observers, civil society organisations, and the Federal Government to ensure that Osun voters are allowed to freely choose their preferred candidate.Olufemi Franklin, representing the Coalition of Public Interest Lawyers, reinforced the call, describing the election as a test of Nigeria’s democratic maturity.
He urged INEC and security agencies to uphold impartiality, stressing that the people must not be robbed of their choice.
The Osun governorship election, one of the key off-cycle contests, is widely seen as a measure of the preparedness of Nigeria’s electoral system before the 2027 general elections.
