Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has described former Governor and Senator Gbenga Daniel as a leader he holds in high esteem, stating that he is closely following in his footsteps despite recent political differences.
Abiodun made the remarks last Friday during the burial service of Mrs Sabainah Opawole, mother of Yeye Olufunke Daniel, at Ibara Baptist Church, Abeokuta.
Addressing mourners, the governor paid glowing tribute to Daniel, saying: “Your Excellency, the former Executive Governor of Ogun State, the Distinguished Senator representing Ogun East Senatorial District, a man who I hold in very high esteem, a man whose footsteps I’m closely following.”
The comments come months after a prolonged rift between the two leaders over the All Progressives Congress (APC) ticket for the Ogun East Senatorial District ahead of the 2027 elections.
Daniel had rejected a consensus arrangement in favour of an open primary before eventually withdrawing from the race, citing alleged intimidation.
Governor Abiodun eventually emerged as the APC candidate for the senatorial seat.
The burial service witnessed brief political tension when supporters of different aspirants chanted slogans in support of their preferred candidates for the 2027 governorship race.
Senator Daniel, however, appealed for calm, allowing the programme to proceed peacefully.
Mrs Opawole, who passed away at the age of 93, was buried in the presence of several dignitaries, including former First Lady Bola Obasanjo and other prominent politicians.
