Tolu Arokodare, Super Eagles striker, has opened up about his protest that forced Wolverhampton Wanderers to cancel one of their pre-season training session.
On Monday, Arokodare sat on the training pitch to prevent
the club, relegated from the English Premier League (EPL) last season, from
training as they begin life in the English Championship.
The 25-year-old refused to exit the pitch, forcing Cesar
Peixoto, the club’s new head coach, to cancel the training session, while
additional security was stationed at their Compton Park training ground to
prevent the Eagles striker from returning.
Arokodare had reportedly been instructed not to train with
the Wolves’ first team, a move which is prohibited by the latest FIFA rule.
Arokodare and Wolves have reportedly been at loggerheads
over the striker’s potential transfer away from the club.
Wolves have accepted a bid from Trabzonspor in the Turkish
Super Lig, while Arokodare prefers a move to Fiorentina in Serie A.
In a post on social media on Tuesday, Arokodare revealed his
account of the training ground incident. The striker said his “only intention
is to fulfil my responsibilities professionally by training, doing my job, and
contributing to the team in accordance with that contract”.
He added he was trying to be in the best shape so he can
contribute to the club whenever he gets the chance.
“Throughout my career, I have always taken great pride in
conducting myself professionally and maintaining the highest training
standards,” Arokodare said.
“My commitment has always been to prepare myself as well as
possible so that I can contribute to my teammates and the club whenever I am
called upon.
“I remain under contract with Wolves, and my only intention
is to fulfil my responsibilities professionally by training, doing my job, and
contributing to the team in accordance with that contract.”
The training ground incident is not the first time Arokodare
has faced disciplinary action at Wolves. In April, he was involved in a scuffle
with teenage teammate Mateus Mane. He was fined for the altercation and only
started one match for Wolves afterwards.
