Daniel Bwala, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Policy Communications, has alleged that foreign interests are playing a significant role in Nigeria’s ongoing security challenges.
Speaking on The Link Up Podcast hosted by Echoo Room, Bwala identified terrorism in the Sahel region as a major factor, noting that militants often cross into Nigeria to attack communities before retreating across borders.
He further claimed that some foreign nationals have been found among Boko Haram members arrested by the Nigerian military, though their identities were not disclosed for security reasons.
Bwala also raised concerns about the activities of certain non-governmental organisations (NGOs), suggesting that their long-term presence in conflict zones hinted at foreknowledge of prolonged crises.
“Many years ago, when Boko Haram started in Borno State, NGOs came for humanitarian work and rented houses for 10 to 15 years. How did they know they would need to stay that long?” he asked.
According to him, these elements not only fuel the crisis but also make ending it more difficult. He stressed the need for coordinated efforts to counter both internal and external drivers of insecurity.
