FG Urges Media, Influencers to Stop Giving Bandits, Terrorists Publicity

The Federal Government has called on journalists and social media influencers to refrain from giving bandits and terrorists the publicity they crave through their reports and online content.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, made the appeal on Monday at the maiden edition of the Arewa Media Summit in Kano.

The summit was organised by the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Public Enlightenment, Abdulaziz Abdulaziz.

“The media has an indispensable role in denying violent extremists the publicity they seek while promoting unity, resilience and hope,” Idris said.

He emphasised that the media plays a critical role in strengthening national unity and preventing violent groups from using publicity to spread fear.

The minister also highlighted the importance of professionalism, fairness, and integrity in journalism, noting that democracy thrives when government is transparent, citizens participate responsibly, and the media performs its constitutional duties effectively.

Idris warned that while technology and smartphones have democratised information sharing, they have also accelerated the spread of fake news and disinformation, which can undermine national unity and erode public trust.

In his remarks, Abdulaziz Abdulaziz said the summit aims to strengthen dialogue between the government, citizens, and the media through accountability, responsibility, and ethical communication.

He urged social media influencers, who command large audiences, to verify information before posting and avoid content that could create division, particularly as the 2027 general elections approach.
