The City Boy Movement has responded to criticism over the attendance of Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Tijani Fatai, at the inauguration of its Lagos State chapter held in Ikeja on Tuesday.
A video of the event, which circulated widely on social media, showed the police chief arriving at the venue, exchanging pleasantries with dignitaries, and walking through the gathering alongside security personnel. The footage sparked concerns about alleged partisan involvement by the police ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement issued by its National Director of Media Monitoring & Rapid Response, Bashir Ahmad, the City Boy Movement dismissed suggestions of political bias, stressing that the CP’s presence should not be interpreted as endorsement or affiliation.
“The mere presence of the Commissioner of Police at a public event should not, without more, be interpreted as political endorsement, partisan participation or institutional alignment with the organisers of that event,” Ahmad said.
He explained that public officers often attend or deploy personnel to civic, political, religious, and community events as part of their constitutional duty to maintain law and order. Such attendance, he noted, does not equate to support for any organisation or cause.
The group emphasized its respect for the independence of security agencies, stating: “We neither seek nor expect preferential treatment from any agency of government. Like every law-abiding organisation, we expect only that our lawful activities will continue to enjoy the protection guaranteed by the Constitution.”
The statement urged the public to assess institutions based on facts rather than speculation, reiterating that the Nigeria Police Force remains bound by its professional obligation to neutrality.
