Akin Osuntokun, former Political Adviser to ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo, has criticized the late former President Muhammadu Buhari’s leadership, insisting that despite his revered status in Northern Nigeria, Buhari did not govern effectively.
Speaking on Arise Television’s Morning Show on Monday, Osuntokun assessed Buhari’s legacy one year after his death. He argued that Buhari failed to improve the living standards of Nigerians and presided over worsening conflicts between Hausa-Fulani militias, farmers, and herders.
“He was a hero of the North but didn’t govern well in terms of affecting the living standard of the people,” Osuntokun said. “It was under him that the conflict between Hausa-Fulani militias and herders-farmers escalated, even while he kept urging people to see them as brothers.”
Osuntokun also accused Buhari of running a government dominated by Northern interests, noting that the former president was unapologetic about such perceptions. He recalled an incident during Buhari’s presidency when he led a Fulani-Muslim delegation to Ibadan to meet Governor Lam Adesina over clashes in Oke-Ogun, stressing that Buhari openly declared he was representing Fulani interests.
