The federal government has announced plans to gradually phase out subsidy payments in Nigeria’s power sector beginning in 2027.
Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, disclosed the decision during a media interactive session on Friday while addressing the sector’s mounting debt profile.
Tegbe explained that the removal would be implemented in stages to ensure Nigerians are not deprived of essential benefits.
He stressed that there is no immediate plan to increase electricity tariffs, assuring citizens that the transition will be managed carefully to protect consumers.
The announcement marks a significant policy shift as the government seeks to reduce fiscal pressure and encourage efficiency in the electricity industry.
