The Bayelsa State Government has strongly refuted media reports claiming it shifted blame for the state’s high poverty rate to President Bola Tinubu and the Federal Government, describing the stories as false and misleading.
In a statement issued on Monday by the Commissioner for Information, Orientation and Strategy, Mrs Ebiuwou Koku-Obiyai, the government clarified that no official response was issued to criticisms by a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) regarding Governor Douye Diri’s six-year performance.
The government specifically denied publishing or circulating any press release titled “Bayelsa Govt Rejects PDP’s Poverty Claims, Defends Six-Year Record,” or any statement that blamed the Tinubu administration for poverty in the state.
“The commissioner neither issued, signed nor circulated any press release responding to the opposition party’s claims,” the statement read.
It challenged media organisations that published the reports to produce the purported statement, insisting that none exists.
The Bayelsa government described the reports as deliberate distortions aimed at creating a false narrative.
It emphasised that Governor Douye Diri maintains a cordial and productive working relationship with President Bola Tinubu and the Federal Government, which continues to deliver tangible benefits to the people of Bayelsa.
The statement further accused the PDP faction of seeking political relevance through falsehoods and reiterated that the Diri administration would not be distracted by what it called baseless allegations.
Bayelsa residents, the government added, are well acquainted with the governor’s performance and can easily separate facts from political mischief.
