Atiku Names Kenneth Okonkwo as New Spokesperson

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has appointed actor-turned-politician and African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain, Kenneth Okonkwo, as his official spokesperson ahead of the 2027 general election.

Okonkwo, who recently criticised the party’s choice of vice-presidential candidate, disclosed the appointment in a statement shared on his official X page.

He expressed gratitude to Atiku for the trust placed in him, saying: “I give God all the glory to be appointed by His Excellency Atiku Abubakar as his Spokesperson. I thank HE AA for the immense confidence reposed in me.”

He described the move as a reflection of Atiku’s leadership style, noting that the former vice president prefers dialogue and compromise over conflict.

According to Okonkwo, discussions with Atiku and ADC leaders addressed concerns about South-East representation, despite challenges posed by the Electoral Act 2026.

The new spokesperson also acknowledged the contributions of Dr Kashim Imam, former ADC Chairman Ralphs Nwosu, and Atiku’s aide Dr Ekene Onwuka in strengthening the party’s structure ahead of the polls.

Okonkwo’s appointment comes weeks after he faulted the ADC’s decision to select former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi as Atiku’s running mate, arguing that the choice could deepen the South-East’s political marginalisation.

With Atiku now confirmed as the ADC’s presidential candidate, Okonkwo pledged to use his new role to advance dialogue and unity, while calling for continued prayers and support to succeed in the task ahead.
