The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has alleged that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is deliberately keeping former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, in detention to weaken opposition forces before the 2027 general elections.
Speaking on Channels Television, ADC National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, said while the party supports the prosecution of anyone with a legitimate case, El-Rufai’s continued detention over bailable offences raises serious concerns.
Abdullahi claimed the APC government intends to keep El-Rufai in custody until after the polls, fearing his release would strengthen opposition pressure.
He also warned about the former governor’s health, stressing that President Bola Tinubu would be held responsible if anything happens to him in detention.
The ADC spokesman criticized the government for prioritizing electoral calculations over national challenges, dismissing the Renewed Hope Agenda as “just a slogan.”
El-Rufai is currently facing charges of alleged financial misconduct filed by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), as well as a separate wire-tapping case brought by the Department of State Services (DSS).
