The Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) in charge of Zone 2 Command, Olohundare Jimoh, has called on Nigerian youths to work closely with security agencies to ensure peaceful 2027 general elections.
AIG Jimoh made the call at the Political Intelligence Summit: Youth-Police Engagement Across the IBILE Divisions, organised by the Lagos State Office of Political, Legislative and Civic Engagement in collaboration with the Bureau of the Public Defender.
He described youths as critical stakeholders in promoting peace, security, and national development, stressing the need for stronger community policing, the fight against misinformation, and responsible participation in the democratic process.
“Effective policing requires collaboration between law enforcement agencies, educational institutions, community organisations and the youth,” Jimoh said.
He added that trust, accountability, dialogue, and inclusiveness form the foundation of successful community policing.
The AIG urged young Nigerians to reject fake news, hate speech, and divisive narratives, and instead use social media responsibly to educate others and promote positive civic engagement.
He warned them against being recruited for criminal activities or election-related violence.
Jimoh noted that sustained engagement between the police and youths has improved relations in Lagos and Ogun states, building greater confidence between both groups.
“The police are no longer just your friends; we are your partners,” he said, encouraging young people to report security concerns and grievances through appropriate channels.
He also addressed concerns about delays in criminal trials due to the absence of investigating police officers in court, attributing the issue to transfers, retirements, and the lengthy nature of some cases.
He assured that the Nigeria Police Force would continue working with stakeholders in the criminal justice system to reduce such delays.
The AIG commended the Lagos State Government for investing in security infrastructure and creating platforms for police-youth dialogue.
He announced plans for future engagements, including school outreach, mentorship, community service, and social media campaigns to promote civic responsibility and security awareness.
Other speakers at the summit, including the Director of the Lagos State Bureau of Public Defender, Mrs Olubunmi Adesomoju, and the Permanent Secretary of the Office of Political, Legislative and Civic Engagement, reinforced the message of collaboration, constitutional rights, and shared responsibility for security.
