ADC Alleges Intense APC Pressure on INEC, Amupitan Ahead of 2027 Elections

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has raised a fresh alarm, claiming that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and its Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, are under heavy pressure from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) as preparations for the 2027 general elections intensify.

The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, made the allegation during an interview with The Sun on Saturday. He described INEC as being caught in a conflict between maintaining its independence and yielding to political influence from the ruling party.

“INEC is conflicted. There is tension between its desire to maintain its independence and the pressure it is facing from the ruling party. Sometimes it yields to that pressure, while at other times it tries to resist and uphold its independence,” Abdullahi stated.

The ADC chieftain expressed sympathy for Prof. Amupitan over the pressures he faces but emphasized that the matter transcends any individual, stressing the need to protect the integrity of the institution.

“We have sympathy for the INEC chairman because we understand the kind of pressure he is under. But this is not about him alone; it is about the institution of INEC,” he said.

Abdullahi warned that INEC, like the judiciary, is currently on trial and has a critical opportunity to prove its loyalty to the Nigerian Constitution and the people rather than any political interest.

“Politicians are not the only ones on trial... INEC is also on trial, just as the judiciary is. INEC has an opportunity to demonstrate that its loyalty lies with the Nigerian Constitution and the Nigerian people,” he added.

He urged Prof. Amupitan to consider his legacy, noting that every government eventually leaves office and is judged by history.

“History will remember Prof. Amupitan. He must decide the role he wants to play in Nigeria’s democratic history whether he wants to be remembered with honour or with ignominy. The opportunity to make that choice is now,” Abdullahi declared.

The allegations come amid heightened political activities and concerns over the conduct of the 2027 polls.
