The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused President Bola Tinubu’s administration of authoritarian tactics following the reported arrest of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai’s personal physician and the alleged assault on his wife.
In a statement on Tuesday, ADC National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi alleged that officials of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) blocked El-Rufai from receiving medical treatment at the National Hospital, Abuja, despite medical advice for admission.
According to the party, El-Rufai’s wife and doctor protested the decision to return him to custody, leading to a scuffle during which his wife was allegedly assaulted and his physician arrested.
The ADC described the incident as a violation of constitutional rights and accused the Tinubu government of using state institutions to intimidate political opponents.
It further claimed El-Rufai has been denied access to his family and doctor despite court orders granting him unrestricted access to lawyers, medical practitioners, and relatives.
The party demanded:Immediate access for El-Rufai to his family, legal team, and medical practitioners.Review of bail conditions to ensure they align with constitutional standards.
Improved detention conditions and compliance with international norms.Transparency from ICPC regarding restrictions imposed on him.
End to political intimidation through state institutions.“The harsh and degrading conditions under which El-Rufai is being held amount to political persecution masquerading as lawful process,” the statement read.
As of press time, the ICPC has not issued a public response to the allegations.
