The Accord party has petitioned President Bola Tinubu, the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, and other stakeholders over alleged harassment, intimidation, and arrest of its members ahead of the August 15 governorship election in Osun State.
In a statement issued on Thursday by its National Chairman, Maxwell Mgbudem, the party renewed its call for the immediate removal of Osun State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan, accusing him of partisanship and warning that his continued stay in office could undermine the credibility of the poll.
Mgbudem claimed that about 100 Accord leaders, candidates, members, and supporters have been arrested and detained across the state, with some transferred to Abuja.
He described the actions as politically motivated and designed to frustrate the party’s campaign.
The party lamented that previous reports of attacks on its campaign council, offices, supporters, and campaign materials were ignored by security agencies, with no arrests made.
“Accord is peacefully carrying out its grassroots campaign for the August 15 governorship election in Osun State,” the statement read.
Mgbudem condemned the alleged targeted harassment and arrest of top government officials, party leaders, and members without formal charges, describing it as an assault on Nigeria’s democracy.
The party urged its supporters to remain peaceful and law-abiding despite the provocation.
It called on President Tinubu, the National Security Adviser, the Inspector-General of Police, civil society organisations, the international community, and other stakeholders to intervene and ensure a level playing field for all parties.
Political activities have intensified in Osun State as parties mobilise for the off-cycle governorship election, with security agencies pledging neutrality.
