Director of News and Political Editor at Arise News, Sumner Sambo, has emphasized that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has no authority to determine who political parties present as candidates for the 2027 general elections.
Speaking during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time on Thursday, Sambo clarified that INEC’s role is limited to observing and documenting the emergence of candidates within parties.
“INEC cannot tell a political party who is or ought to be its candidate. What INEC can do is be a witness to how a candidate emerges, take down notes, and preserve them. If the process goes to court, they can present that in court,” he explained.
He further noted that unless disputes are taken before a court of law, INEC must accept the candidates submitted by political parties. According to him, it is up to aggrieved aspirants to challenge the process in court, not INEC.
This statement comes as parties finalize and submit their candidate lists to the electoral body ahead of the 2027
polls.
