15 Killed, 17 Others Injured in Early Morning Auto Crash in Kwara

A tragic lone trailer crash along the Ogbomoso-Oloru highway at the Oko-Olowo axis in Ilorin South Local Government Area of Kwara State has claimed multiple lives and left several others injured in the early hours of Monday.

The accident occurred around 2:32 a.m. near the Muslim Cemetery in Oko-Olowo, involving a DAF XF trailer with registration number GWL 274 XC, driven by Nasiru Muhammed. According to a situation report from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Kwara Sector Command, a total of 48 male occupants were on board the vehicle.

While 15 people died on the spot, 17 others sustained serious injuries including fractures, dislocations, and bruises. Sixteen passengers escaped unhurt.

The FRSC attributed the crash primarily to driver fatigue. Emergency responders arrived at the scene within five minutes of the distress call, with rescue operations jointly conducted by personnel from the FRSC Oloru Unit Command and the Oko-Olowo outpost.

The injured victims were promptly evacuated to Arewa Medical Centre and Baki Hospital for treatment. The bodies of the deceased were released to their families and the Sarkin Hausawa of Oko-Olowo for burial. Search efforts continued for any additional victims possibly trapped under the trailer’s load.

Kwara State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Kabiru Babatunde Kazeem, who visited the crash scene to coordinate operations, announced plans to intensify public enlightenment campaigns through town hall meetings with stakeholders. He urged motorists to avoid night travelling and mixed loading, emphasizing that fatigue is a major cause of fatal road crashes.

This incident highlights ongoing concerns about road safety on Kwara highways, particularly during early morning hours.
