Senior Political Assistant to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Demola Olarenwaju, has issued a strong warning to President Bola Tinubu’s administration over the continued detention of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).
Olarenwaju, in a statement posted on X on Saturday, described the alleged denial of medical care to El-Rufai as a dangerous move the government cannot afford.
“Denying El-Rufai access to medical care is a risk the Bola Tinubu regime cannot afford. And we must say it clearly yet again that if anything happens to the man, it will be on the government that has detained him illegally. Politics taken to this extent is extremely dangerous,” he said.
The warning follows claims by El-Rufai’s media aide, Muyiwa Adekeye, that the former governor is suffering from swollen, reddish, and itchy eyes and requires urgent medical attention, which has allegedly been denied while in ICPC custody.
El-Rufai was arrested at the Abuja International Airport earlier this year and arraigned on charges of abuse of office and money laundering allegedly committed during his tenure as governor.
He has been in detention since mid-February 2026.Olarenwaju’s statement adds to growing criticism from opposition figures who describe El-Rufai’s prolonged detention despite court proceedings as politically motivated.
