The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) has rejected claims by Senator Adams Oshiomhole that the corporation is a “house of thieves.”
Former Chief Financial Officer of NNPC, Umar Ajiya, made the clarification during a Senate Public Accounts Committee session investigating alleged misappropriation of funds.
Ajiya explained that ₦2.9 billion was spent on the incorporation and rebranding of the company, not ₦5.8 billion as alleged.“We are not thieves. ₦2.9 billion was used to register NNPC, not ₦5.8 billion.
There is no money missing,” he said.He stressed that the company has consistently published audited accounts for over four decades, making its financial records open to public scrutiny.
“If money was actually missing in NNPC during our period, we would not have had the courage to publish audited accounts in the past 44 years. We made it a duty to submit reports to the Auditor-General and also upload them on our website for Nigerians to criticise and scrutinise,” Ajiya added.
The remarks come after Oshiomhole accused the NNPCL of mismanaging funds, sparking renewed debate over transparency in Nigeria’s oil sector.
