Popular social media activist Martins Vincent Otse, widely known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), has raised concerns about receiving death threats from some Northern Nigerian influencers following his recent criticism of governance in the region.
In a video shared on his official social media pages, VDM claimed that certain Arewa influencers reacted angrily to his comments on development challenges in Northern Nigeria, with some allegedly sending direct threats via his DMs.
“I see some northern/Arewa influencers asking for my head because of the video I made yesterday. Some are in my DMs dropping threats,” he stated.Despite the backlash, VDM insisted he is not intimidated and affirmed he could safely visit any part of Northern Nigeria. He clarified that his remarks targeted political leaders and governance failures, not the ordinary people of the region.“
The northern part of Nigeria is holding Nigeria back because the politicians made it so. I am not blaming the people, I am blaming the government for doing that to its people,” VDM explained.
He described Northern Nigerians as hardworking and honest citizens whose progress has been hindered by poor leadership, insecurity, poverty, and limited economic opportunities. VDM pointed to what he called ineffective empowerment initiatives, such as a recent Kano State program that distributed plates to beneficiaries.
“I wonder why the Kano State governor was doing an empowerment programme and he was sharing plates. That’s not empowerment, that’s empowering poverty,” he remarked. The activist also highlighted how insecurity has disrupted farming activities in parts of the North and urged his critics to channel their energy toward holding politicians accountable rather than attacking him.“You’re having a fight with VDM when you should be fighting with the politicians,” he added.
