The University of Port Harcourt has announced the appointment of Professor Princewill Chike, former Rivers State Commissioner for Health under Governor Nyesom Wike, as its 10th Vice-Chancellor.
Chike will take over from the outgoing Vice-Chancellor, Professor Owunari Georgewill, whose tenure ends on July 13, 2026. Georgewill, the institution’s 9th VC, is expected to preside over his final convocation ceremony on June 5–6.
In a statement issued on Thursday, UNIPORT’s Public Relations Officer, Dr. Sam Kpenu, confirmed that Chike’s appointment was approved by the university’s Governing Council after a rigorous selection process.
The council emphasized that the exercise complied fully with the Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act and the University of Port Harcourt Act.
Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, congratulated Chike and expressed confidence in his ability to provide visionary leadership for the continued growth of the institution.
Professor Chike is expected to formally assume office on July 13, 2026, marking the beginning of a new chapter in UNIPORT’s leadership.
