Tinubu Shows Courage, Foresight For Championing State Police – Metuh

Olisa Metuh, Director of Mobilisation and Enlightenment of the Renewed Hope Ambassadors, has praised President Bola Tinubu for championing the establishment of state police, describing it as a courageous and historic step in Nigeria’s security reform.

Metuh, a former National Publicity Secretary of the PDP who later joined the APC, said the passage of the State Police Bill marked a turning point in efforts to tackle insecurity through decentralised policing.

“President Tinubu has demonstrated courage, foresight, and statesmanship by championing a reform that successive administrations were unable to accomplish despite widespread public support,” Metuh stated.

He argued that state police would:

Strengthen community policing and improve intelligence gathering.Enhance response to security threats such as kidnapping, banditry, and terrorism.Create jobs and boost growth by expanding opportunities in the security sector.

Metuh urged governors to work closely with the Federal Government to ensure successful implementation, while calling on the National Assembly, civil society, and traditional institutions to establish safeguards against abuse.

“State police must never become instruments of political intimidation or oppression. Instead, they must operate professionally, independently, and in accordance with the Constitution and the rule of law,” he said.

The State Police Bill, already passed by the National Assembly and backed by speakers of the 36 State Houses of Assembly, governors, and major political stakeholders, paves the way for states to establish and manage their own police forces.

If enacted, the reform will address the limitations of Nigeria’s centralised policing system and strengthen grassroots security nationwide.
