President Bola Tinubu has announced the renaming and revitalisation of the Institute of Petroleum Studies in Kaduna as the General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua University of Geological Sciences and Engineering Technology.
The announcement was made in the President’s Democracy Day broadcast on June 12, 2026, as part of efforts to honour key figures in Nigeria’s pro-democracy struggle.
Tinubu highlighted the late General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua’s contributions to national unity and democratic development, describing him as one of the architects of modern democratic Nigeria.
“Among the architects of modern democratic Nigeria, we honour General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua for his vision of national partnership,” the President said.
The renaming elevates the completed institute into a full-fledged specialised university focused on geological sciences and engineering technology, aimed at building capacity in critical sectors of Nigeria’s extractive and energy industries.
General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua, a prominent military officer and politician, played a significant role in the political transitions of the late 1970s and was actively involved in pro-democracy activities during the military era.
He is remembered as a unifying figure who advocated for national cohesion and democratic governance.
The move forms part of broader commemorations of June 12, including the conferment of national honours on dozens of pro-democracy activists and retired military officers who contributed to the restoration of civilian rule in Nigeria.
