Abacha Died of Heart Attack, Wasn’t Poisoned – Ex-DSS Director

A former Assistant Director of the Department of State Services (DSS), Dennis Amachree, has debunked long-standing conspiracy theories surrounding the death of former Head of State, General Sani Abacha, insisting he died of a natural heart attack.

Amachree made the revelation while promoting his new book, DSS @ 40: My Journey Behind the Shield.

He said evidence from investigations and accounts available at the time pointed clearly to a heart attack, not poisoning as widely alleged.

“From everything she told me and from what I gathered during the investigation, I strongly believe it was a heart attack,” Amachree stated, referencing information gathered after Abacha’s death.

Abacha died on June 8, 1998, at the age of 54 while in office as Head of State. His sudden death has over the years generated several conspiracy theories, including claims of poisoning, with some high-profile figures like former Chief Security Officer Major Hamza Al-Mustapha and others offering different accounts.

Amachree’s position challenges those narratives, adding a new voice from within the security apparatus to the enduring debate about one of Nigeria’s most controversial deaths.
