Tinubu Hosts Madagascar’s President Randrianirina at Aso Rock

President Bola Tinubu on Monday welcomed Madagascar’s President, Colonel Michaël Randrianirina, to the Aso Rock Presidential Villa in Abuja for closed-door talks.

Randrianirina, who arrived at 2:57 p.m., was received with ceremonial honors by the Presidential Brigade of Guards before being ushered into the Villa by Foreign Affairs Minister Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu.

This marks the Malagasy leader’s first official visit to Nigeria since assuming office in October 2025, following the departure of former President Andry Rajoelina.

It is also the first time a sitting Malagasy head of state has visited Nigeria, as past engagements between both nations’ leaders were typically held at multilateral summits abroad.

The meeting follows a brief encounter between Tinubu and Randrianirina at the Africa Forward Summit in Nairobi last May.

Since taking office, Randrianirina has embarked on diplomatic tours across Africa, including Gabon, while signaling Madagascar’s interest in joining the BRICS bloc.

Although details of Monday’s discussions remain undisclosed, sources suggest the agenda includes regional security, agricultural cooperation, and strategies to mitigate climate change impacts, particularly in southern Madagascar where infrastructure has been severely affected.
