A 22-year-old resident, Abdulmalik Bakare, and two other persons were killed after suspected cultists launched a deadly attack on Oreta community in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State.
The incident occurred on Wednesday night, triggering panic among residents and disrupting commercial activities in the area. Six suspects have been arrested in connection with the attack, according to the deceased’s father, Tunde Bakare.
Speaking with journalists on Sunday, Bakare said the Divisional Police Officer assured the family that a thorough investigation would be conducted into the killings.
Residents told reporters that the violence may have stemmed from an earlier altercation along Gbogbo Road involving a trailer driver and some suspected hoodlums.
A resident, who gave his name as Fasasi, recounted that tensions escalated in the afternoon when some youths stopped a container-laden trailer and demanded money from the driver. The driver reportedly insisted that his Chinese employers had already paid N350,000 to certain individuals at a nearby junction.
During the confrontation, one of the area boys who climbed the trailer was trapped under a tyre and died. Police reportedly described the incident as an accident and said it had been settled.
However, Fasasi alleged that some youths later regrouped and launched a retaliatory attack around 8 p.m., storming the community on motorcycles and shooting indiscriminately.
“The boy was about to close his shop when they killed him. They also killed a physically challenged child who was eating. They started breaking shops and smashing glass doors. A person who came to buy fish was also killed,” he said.
The identities of the two other victims had not been officially confirmed at the time of filing the report.
When journalists visited the community on Sunday, an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty still lingered, with many residents shaken by the violence.
Efforts to get an official reaction from the Lagos State Police Command proved unsuccessful, as calls and messages to the command’s spokesperson, SP Abimbola Adebisi, were not answered.
