Borno State Declares Tuesday Public Holiday to Celebrate Islamic New Year

The Borno State Government has declared Tuesday, June 16, 2026, a public holiday to mark the first day of the Islamic calendar year 1448 After Hijra (AH), corresponding to 1st Muharram.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, Usman Tar, said Governor Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum approved the holiday to allow residents to commemorate the occasion.

The statement urged citizens to use the day for reflection, rededicating themselves to peaceful coexistence, unity, tolerance, justice, and service to humanity and the development of the state. It also encouraged prayers for a peaceful, pluralistic, and democratic Nigeria while embracing values that promote national unity and the country’s positive image globally.

The Hijri calendar, being lunar-based, is about 11–12 days shorter than the Gregorian calendar, so Islamic New Year dates shift annually.

This declaration applies to Borno State, with government offices, schools, and public institutions expected to observe the holiday.
