‘The World Is Watching’ — Activist IG Wala Slams Judiciary Over El-Rufai’s Bail Conditions

Human rights and anti-corruption advocate, Ibrahim Garba Wala, popularly known as IG Wala, has criticized the judiciary for imposing what he described as “impossible bail conditions” on former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Saturday, Wala urged judges handling El-Rufai’s case to uphold constitutional justice, warning that the current bail terms amount to punitive pre-trial detention rather than a fair legal process.

He condemned requirements such as multiple sureties who must be senior civil servants, submission of original Certificates of Occupancy for properties worth hundreds of millions in Maitama or Asokoro, and restrictive check-ins at security headquarters.

“These stringent, near-impossible conditions perfectly capture the institutional overreach condemned by the NBA leadership,” Wala said, referencing recent remarks by Nigerian Bar Association President, Afam Osigwe, SAN.

He argued that such measures effectively block El-Rufai from securing bail, turning the process into a tool of political attrition rather than accountability.

“The indefinite confinement of a citizen whose health is at risk has evolved into a calculated strategy of physical and psychological attrition,” Wala added.

The activist called for an immediate review of the bail terms, urging the judiciary to set realistic and achievable conditions that do not, in his words, “require turning civil servants into real estate moguls.”
