Soldiers Have no Right to Stop Protesters from Entering Presidential Villa – Sowore

Prominent activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has asserted that Nigerian soldiers have no authority to prevent citizens from accessing the Presidential Villa (Aso Rock) during peaceful protests.Sowore made the remarks on Thursday, June 4, 2026, while leading a peaceful demonstration in Abuja aimed at highlighting the worsening security challenges across the country.

According to Sowore, protesters were stopped by a heavy deployment of military personnel at the entrance to the Presidential Villa. He emphasized that the demonstration remained peaceful, which is why the group chose not to engage or confront the security operatives.“Aso Rock is Nigerian,” Sowore declared. He added that when the citizens are ready, they will take over the Presidential Villa, and no military force can stop them.

“We had gone to the Villa but they put soldiers in large numbers. It is not as if we cannot push them away but because it is a peaceful protest, we decided not to have any conversation with soldiers or police,” he said.Sowore further stated that protesters are not afraid of soldiers or police, insisting instead that the security forces should fear the people, whom he described as their employers. “We pay them,” he added. He noted that the protest included women and children, particularly mothers, to underscore its peaceful nature.

The demonstration comes amid ongoing concerns over insecurity in Nigeria, with Sowore using the platform to demand greater action from authorities.
