Supporters of Hammed Tajudeen Akanbi, popularly known as Hammed Ajiran, staged a protest at a Lagos Magistrate Court on Thursday, June 4, 2026, after the court ordered his remand for an additional 10 days due to the delayed legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
A Lagos State Magistrate Court in Ogba, presided over by Justice L. A. Owolabi, extended the remand of Hammed Tajudeen Akanbi following the DPP's failure to provide its legal advice as previously directed.
Hammed Akanbi was first arraigned on May 22, 2026, on multiple charges including conspiracy to commit murder, membership of an unlawful society, threat of violence, assault, and other related offenses. He pleaded not guilty to all counts.
During proceedings, defense counsel Adedotun Ajulo, Esq., applied for bail on behalf of his client. The court, however, declined the application, citing the need for supplementary advice from the DPP amid fresh facts and evidence from further investigations by the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti.
At the previous sitting, the court had given the DPP 10 days to file its advice. On Thursday, DPP representative Ms. A. Munir confirmed receipt of the case file but stated that the advice was not yet ready, though she assured the court it would be available before the next date. She also noted that the DPP would respond to the bail application in due course.
The police prosecutor, A. O. Nwabuisi, Esq., confirmed compliance with the court's earlier directive and informed the court that the defendant has been receiving medical treatment at a police facility after collapsing following his initial arraignment. The prosecutor left the bail decision to the court's discretion.
Defense counsel urged that the suspect remain in police custody for the short adjournment period. The court subsequently adjourned the matter for another 10 days and ordered that Hammed Akanbi remain in custody at SCID Panti pending the DPP's advice.
In a show of solidarity, members of the Ajiran community gathered at the court premises, displaying banners and placards demanding his release and proclaiming his innocence. Protesters claimed in a viral video that the case stems from an ongoing land dispute rather than a genuine criminal matter, alleging that influential individuals and state actors are using the justice system to target the defendant over community land interests.
A community representative, Mr. Gbenga Gbenga, spoke on behalf of the protesters, stating that community members know those behind what they described as the defendant's ordeal.
