SERAP Demands N110bn Recovery from National Assembly Lawmakers

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has called on the leadership of the National Assembly to recover and restitute N110 billion allegedly spent unlawfully on vehicles and allowances for lawmakers.

This follows a Federal High Court judgment in Lagos by Justice Yellim Bogoro, which declared the expenditure of N40 billion on 465 vehicles and N70 billion in support allowances for newly elected members as unlawful, citing breaches of procurement laws, constitutional provisions, and public trust.

In a letter dated June 20, 2026, SERAP urged the National Assembly to immediately implement mechanisms for full restitution, warning it would return to court if its demands are not met within seven days.

SERAP’s Deputy Director, Kolawole Oluwadare, stressed that allowing lawmakers to retain benefits from the unlawful spending would undermine public confidence and the rule of law.

The organisation also called for greater transparency in legislative budgeting, including public hearings on the National Assembly’s budget and proactive publication of detailed expenditure information.

SERAP argued that the court’s findings provide sufficient grounds for reversing the benefits derived from the expenditure tainted by self-dealing and conflict of interest.
