‘Security is Nigeria’s problem’ — Arewa youths call for unity against insecurity

The Arewa Youth Assembly (AYA) has called on Nigerians to reject divisive tendencies and the “embers of hate” that can undermine national unity.

Speaking at a Democracy Day celebration rally in Abuja on Friday, Mohammed Aboki, deputy speaker of the north-central zone of the assembly, warned against the politicisation of insecurity, adding that national security is a collective responsibility.

“We call on all Nigerians to say no to divisive tendencies and focus on the strength that unites us,” he said.

“Nigerians must put to shame the embers of hate and rally behind our security architecture to put a permanent end to insecurity.

“Security is not a northern problem or a southern problem. It is Nigeria’s problem, and it demands Nigeria’s collective response.”

Aboki said the country’s 27 years of uninterrupted democratic rule were made possible by the sacrifices of security personnel and called for greater public support for the nation’s security architecture.

He added that Nigeria would overcome insecurity through collaborative efforts among citizens and security agencies.

Aboki commended President Bola Tinubu for supporting the armed forces and security agencies in strengthening the country’s security framework.

Also speaking, Collins Eshiofeh, convener of Nigeria Citizens Watch for Good Governance, urged Nigerians to rally behind the country’s service chiefs.

Eshiofeh said those seeking to exploit insecurity for partisan gain are doing a disservice to the country and to security personnel who have paid the ultimate price in defence of the nation.

“We demand clearly and without equivocation that the nation’s security must not be politicised,” he said.

“Those who seek to weaponise insecurity for political gain do a grave disservice to this nation and to the memory of every soldier, police officer, and intelligence operative who has laid down their life in service.

“Nigerians must put to shame the embers of hate and rally behind our security architecture to put a permanent end to insecurity.”

Eshiofeh added that the service chiefs should not be made “pawns in partisan games”, describing them as patriots and guardians of the country’s democracy.
