The House of Representatives has summoned the Service Chiefs and National Security Adviser (NSA) Nuhu Ribadu to appear before it over the escalating wave of insecurity across Nigeria.
The resolution was passed during Tuesday’s plenary session following the adoption of a motion sponsored by Hon. Sulaiman Gumi, representing the Gummi/Bukkuyum Federal Constituency of Zamfara State.
Lawmakers expressed deep concern over the rising incidents of banditry, kidnapping, terrorism, and other violent crimes that continue to plague several parts of the country, particularly in the North-West, North-East, and North-Central regions.
The House described the current security situation as unacceptable and demanded urgent explanations and concrete strategies from the nation’s top security officials.
The Service Chiefs expected at the summons include the Chief of Defence Staff, Chief of Army Staff, Chief of Naval Staff, and Chief of Air Staff.
They, alongside the NSA, are expected to brief the House on current security operations, challenges, and measures being taken to restore normalcy.
This summons reflects growing frustration among lawmakers over the persistent security challenges despite repeated government assurances.
It comes amid recent high-profile abductions and attacks that have heightened public anxiety and criticism of the administration’s security architecture.
The date for the appearance of the security chiefs is expected to be communicated soon as the House seeks actionable solutions to stem the tide of violence.
