Reps Minority Caucus Adopts Gbajabiamila’s Legacy as Opposition Benchmark

The Deputy Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Abdussamad Dasuki, has pledged to lead a principled opposition that prioritizes accountability, transparency, and good governance, stressing that the caucus will not oppose government policies merely for political reasons.

Speaking in Sokoto on Tuesday while receiving elders and stakeholders from his Kebbe/Tambuwal constituency, Dasuki said the caucus would provide “credible and effective” opposition aimed at advancing the interests of Nigerians.

“Our responsibility is not opposition for opposition’s sake. We will pursue constructive engagement, promote good governance, strengthen accountability and support laws and policies that improve the lives of Nigerians,” he stated.

Dasuki revealed that the caucus has set the leadership style of former Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila (2011–2015) as its minimum benchmark, describing his tenure as a golden standard for opposition politics in Nigeria’s parliament.

“A vibrant and responsible opposition is indispensable to democracy. The standard set by Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila remains a reference point for effective legislative oversight and people-centred representation,” he added.

On security, Dasuki urged Northern governors to collaborate more closely, warning that banditry and terrorism have outgrown state boundaries.

He also called for deeper cooperation with neighbouring countries, particularly Niger, to tackle cross-border insurgency.

Addressing the minimum wage debate, Dasuki insisted that many states can afford to pay workers ₦100,000 or more, citing increased revenue allocations from recent economic reforms.

Meanwhile, Sokoto ADC Chairman Abdullahi Maigwandu praised Dasuki’s emergence, describing him as a strong leader, while criticizing some lawmakers from the state as “bench warmers.”

He expressed confidence that the ADC could challenge the APC at both state and federal levels through constructive opposition.
