Eric Chelle Extends Super Eagles Deal, Takes Charge of Olympic Eagles

Nigeria’s Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle, has signed a new contract that keeps him in charge of the senior national team while also handing him responsibility for the U-23 Olympic Eagles.

Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, confirmed the development on Tuesday after a meeting with Nigeria Football Federation officials in Abuja.

The talks focused on long-term plans for the national teams.Chelle’s initial two-year deal was set to expire at the end of 2026. Following months of negotiations, both sides agreed on improved remuneration and expanded support for his backroom staff.

“We have reached new terms with the coach about his new remuneration. We are also going to take care of his assistants, and there are other benchmarks we have put on the table,” Dikko said.

The Franco-Malian coach, who guided Nigeria to a third-place finish at the 2025 AFCON in Morocco, had reportedly requested a salary package of $130,000 per month, covering his assistants as well.

Beyond his Super Eagles duties, Chelle will now oversee the U-23 team as Nigeria begins preparations for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

Dikko explained that the move was designed to ensure continuity, with younger players expected to transition into the senior squad.

“The objective is not to give the coach more work but to start building for the future,” Dikko added.

The expanded role comes with added pressure. Nigeria’s U-23 side has failed to qualify for the last two Olympic Games, while the Super Eagles only recently returned to the FIFA World Cup after missing two consecutive editions.

Chelle’s dual assignment is seen as a crucial step in rebuilding Nigeria’s football structure and ensuring a smoother pathway for emerging talent.
