Reps Extend 2025 Capital Budget Implementation to September

The House of Representatives has approved a three-month extension for the implementation of the capital component of the 2025 Appropriation Act, moving the deadline from June 30 to September 30, 2026.

The decision came during an emergency session presided over by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, where lawmakers fast-tracked the passage of a bill amending the Appropriation Act.

The extension is aimed at giving the Federal Government more time to complete ongoing projects funded under the 2025 budget.House Leader Prof.

Julius Ihonvbere explained that the move was necessary to prevent disruptions in national development, noting that several capital projects remain unfinished.

“We are not altering the budget; we are simply extending its lifespan to ensure growth and continuity,” he said.

Speaker Abbas echoed this, stressing that records from the Appropriations Committee showed the capital budget was still being implemented.

“It is in the best interest of the country to extend the deadline to September 30 so the government can fulfill its obligations,” he stated.

The extension provides Ministries, Departments, and Agencies additional time to execute projects and utilize allocated funds. However, it also highlights recurring challenges in Nigeria’s budget cycle, including procurement delays, revenue shortfalls, and slow project execution.

In the same session, the House announced new committee leadership appointments. Ali Madaki was named Chairman of the Committee on Special Duties, Ali Isa took over Shipping Services, Pascal Agbodike was appointed to head the SME Development Agency Committee, and Kelechi Nwogu now chairs Hydrological Services.

Abbas urged the new leaders to deploy their legislative expertise to strengthen oversight and drive progress.

This rewrite keeps the focus sharp: the budget extension, its economic implications, and the committee reshuffle.
