IPOB Slams Soludo Over Aide’s Criticism of Peter Obi on Kanu’s Release

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has strongly defended Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, after he renewed calls for the release of its detained leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

Obi, speaking recently in Washington, D.C., insisted that Kanu’s continued detention was unjustifiable.

His remarks drew sharp criticism from Ejimofor Opara, media aide to Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo, who described Obi’s comments as a “major slap” on the judiciary in Nigeria and Finland, referencing Simon Ekpa’s conviction for terrorism in Helsinki.

In response, IPOB accused Soludo of political inconsistency and hypocrisy. The group’s spokesperson, Emma Powerful, recalled that Soludo had previously visited Kanu in DSS custody in January 2023, pledging to stand as surety for him.

IPOB alleged that Soludo’s current stance was politically motivated, declaring: “What changed is your ambition.”The organisation reiterated its demand for Kanu’s “immediate and unconditional release,” stressing that his imprisonment is a matter of justice, not politics.

IPOB noted that many Nigerians across ethnic and religious lines continue to support Kanu’s freedom.Kanu was convicted in November 2025 on terrorism-related charges, including incitement and membership of a proscribed organisation, and sentenced to life imprisonment.

His legal team has appealed the ruling, describing it as a “travesty of justice.”Kanu’s detention remains a flashpoint in Nigerian politics, with supporters portraying him as a political prisoner, while the Federal Government insists he must face justice for separatist activities in the South-East.
